[English] Nordheim: Beer, Metal, Trolls and Vomit!

Location: Québec, Canada

Warraxe (vocals, guitar)
Benfok (bass, back vocals)
Fred (lead guitar)
Lucas Biron (drums)

Genre: folk metal

Nordheim is such a great band I met randomly on Encyclopaedia Metallum one day! They're awesome and so very funny! Check out this interview we did with them!

I.    Hi, Nordheim! It’s a pleasure for us and we’re very thankful to interview you guys! First, Nordheim is a great name, it sounds great. What’s the meaning and why did you choose this one for the band?

Yeah I know it's cool =D We thought it sounded good and was easy to remember. Furthermore, it means something like '' House of the North ''.

II.
Nordheim’s logo is pretty awesome too. All those curves and details make it even better. It totally matches with this folk metal sound proposal of the band. How was to create a logo that fits to Nordheim?

I just drew something that looked like we sound.

III.   Nordheim started in 2006 with Warraxe and Benfok, right? Then you guys looked for other members and, according to the funny bio at the band’s blog, “[…] these musicians not only needed to be serious and talented, they also needed to be compatible with the inferior brains of Warraxe and Benfok […]” So, how was the process, to bring people to the band and so on?

We just picked some of our close friends that happened to be good musicians! That way we didn't have to underta
ke a neverending quest is search of guys that are not repulsed by sniffing  farts and playing d&d.

IV.    Why did you decide to use pseudonyms on Nordheim? And also, what influences each of you carry to the band?

These are not band pseudonyms they are our actual real life nicknames! I think that we all bring our own influences and ideas individually though we are close friends and most of our ideas go in the same direction! One band... one direction... One Direction... BABY YOU LIGHT UP MY WORLD LIKE NOBODY ELSE! THE WAY THAT YOU FLIP YOUR HAIR... =D

V.
The first work of the band was “Demo 2009” released that year. How was to compose and produce those three songs?

It was pretty cool! It wasn't perfect but this demo helped us to understand how studio life works and we got a glimpse of what we sounded like for the first time!

VI.    In 2010, Nordheim’s first full-length
came out. With the three previous songs and seven more, it’s certainly a masterpiece. I would highlight the self-titled, “Beer, Metal, Trolls and Vomit”, “Glorious March” and “Blessing from the Stars”. How was to compose and record ‘Lost in the North’ via independent?

It was pretty much like a longer version of the demo because the same guy recorded our demo and our first album. He is also one of our friends so there was no real new experience at that point!

'Lost in the North' and its killer cover art by Nicolas Francoeur!

VII.    The latest work of Nordheim is ‘Refill’ which is another great, great work. Mass Murder Messiah, which is also a band from Canada and the Norwegian folk metal band, TrollfesT, featured you guys on this album.  On this work, I would highlight “Ov Frost and Ice”, “Get Drunk Or Die Tryin’ ”,  “Watch the Raven Die” and “Soulblood”. How did the composition and recording processes go? And what about this awesome artwork, who designed it?

Nicolas Francoeur did the artwork and yeah we were really pleased by the result! The recording went really well and we had to live at Jeff Fortin's house for the duration of the recording! The guy is really cool and we had good laughs while watching old Arnold Schwarzenegger movies! another great experience for us!

VIII.
Still talking about the songs on ‘Refill’, the video made for “Get Drunk Or Die Tryin’ ”  is awesome! How did the whole idea of the fans filming come out?

We thought that it would be cool for the fans to get involved in the making of the video! Knowing that they were filmed ( by themselves ) they all went wild and we could see in the video that the greatest thing that Nordheim brings to it's fan is a feeling of brotherhood and partying!

IX.    Talking about sound evolution, on Nordheim’s Facebook page we found: “[…] We will kick the shit out of all the music world, one pagan ass at the time […] So talking about taking one step at the time, how would you guys describe the evolution of Nordheim’s music since the early songs until now?

We keep on going heavier and fas
ter on each album! All I can say is that the upocoming third album is not an exception!

'Refill' and its artwork by Nicolas Francoeur! It shows us even more the atmosphere of Nordheim!

X.    What other underground bands would you recommend to metal fans?

Instanzia, Grimoire, Monarque, Gris, Twillight Force, Primal Frost, Saccage, Unbowed

XI.    How did the partnership with Maple Records happen?

He contacted us, and then we were like '' What? '' and then he was like '' Nice shoes, wanna fuck? '' and then we were like '' I guess... ''.

XII.    You guys are making Nordheim present in many metal events there, aren’t you? Viking Fest. Hellfest Lanaudiere, Sheerbrooke and the future Piratefest (with the great Alestorm) to name some of them. So, what do you guys think about your local underground metal scene?

It's really cool when you get to know each other and play gigs with some of your friends. Lots of bands share musicians so we get along really well with almost everybody!

XIII.    Something else we found on Nordheim’s blog is: “[…] Nordheim is ready to sail through many perilous travels aboard their troll longship […]”. So do you think about touring in South America?

It would be awesome but the offers we get are really expensive.

XIV.    How is Nordheim’s agenda for 2016? And what about the near future?

A third album and we have an upcoming show with Kalmah!

XV.   And, to end our conversation, I would like to thank you guys again for your time and consideration. I wish each of you all the best and success to Nordheim, too. This final space is for you to say anything you want to!

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to talk to you but you shouldn't have left that much space... It will be filled with shit... Did you know that if a T-Rex is super juiced up on steroids and that you jam a space ship up his butt and you replace one of his arm with a chainsaw... you get Sawrexship... roids... eeeh... penis [English] Muqueta na Oreia: in Portuguese and unique

Location São Paulo, Brazil

Bruno Zito (guitar)
Cris (bass)
Henry (drums)
Ramires (vocals and percussion)

Genre: metal
I met Muqueta na Oreia on a bands dispute in São Paulo settled up by this well-known Brazilian show house, Manifesto. The first contact I had with them was  amazing because of these guys' energy on stage which is insanely unique! Check out the following interview we did with them!

I. Hello, Muqueta na Oreia! I would like to thank you guys so much for this interview opportunity. First, how was looking for a name that would fit with the ideas and sound proposals of the band?

Ramires:
We thank you for your support.
In fact we do not look for a name to the band, it came to us (laughs). A long time ago, a friend of us made a compilation with heavy metal bands only in a K7 and on the label he wrote Muqueta na Oreia (freely translated to English as punch in the ear) , I don't need to say that it ended up being my favorite K7. Years later, when we set up the band, the name just came to my mind and everyone liked it at the time. It certainly defines exactly how we sound: heavy and sarcastic.

II. Now, talking a little time to talk about the band's formation, how was to bring people to Muqueta in Oreia there in 2007? What are the influences that each of you bring to the band?

Bruno Zito:
Cris, Ramires (who is also my cousin) and I had already started several other projects, we knew each other for years.
Actually, Cris and Ramires played together since their 15 years, which at that time I was only 8, but I used to follow them closely. Sometimes they put me in situations that were true fireproofs. Whenever any member of these bands disappeared (yes... this happened with some frequency), it was me who used to take the vacant place to help them. I've played bass with the cords tied up with wire (laughs), I played percussion instruments, I was a drum roadie, and it all happened before the age of 12 (laughs). There were festivals, competitions or even bars where we played more than 40 songs in a night. It was pretty insane to a kid, but it was the best school I could had. Henry, we kinda hunted him on the internet, there was an announcement he made at the time saying "Drummer looks for band". He has even had forgotten because we called him two years after he published that (laughs). We are lucky, we found "the guy" and he lived in the next door city.

From left to right: Cris, Bruno Zito, Ramires and Henry

III. On the lyrics' theme issue you guys chose for the band, Facebook tells us that "add some few dashes (or many of them) of heavy metal and horror movies, and you have one of the most original bands from Brazil.". How to connect the sound with this macabre theme in one Muqueta na Oreia?

Henry:
We listen to many styles, each of us have influences, some of them are like Sepultura, Metallica, Pantera and so on, but others are very different even (laughs).
And these differences between us are just what makes us unique, because we do not censor or care anything about what others will think. The preference is the heavy sound, that aggression is something natural to our music and to the energy that we take to the stage. The show is intense, those who went and watched, they know. The macabre theme was a bid more to the first album 'Lobisomem em Lua Cheia' with the songs '
“Mundo dos Mortos” and  “O Médico e o Monstro”, inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson' writtings. Also, the songs “De volta ao mundo dos mortos” and "Lobisomem em Lua Cheia" and the video clip theme to the track "O Rosto". On the album "Blatta", we explore different ways, but the macabre tone is still present, as in "Exu Caveira" and "Imortal".

IV. How would you describe the sound of Muqueta using only three words for someone who has not heard it yet?

Cris:
MUQUETA NA OREIA

V. The first work of Muqueta in Oreia came with the full-length 'Lobisomem em Lua Cheia', released in 2010. It is an exceptional album, indeed! Sensational intros, fast drums, insane riffs, anyway, a very heavy instrumental that still does not take away the attention of very well done vocal. The highlighting songs would be the selftitled one, "Rock 'N' Roll", "O Cão" and "F62". How was writing and recording this album?
Cris: Ah! It was all new. This was our first official CD to be sold on stores, with professional recording and placing on the market. We did not know anyone in the music field, we started from scratch, going door to door, and we were doing what we thought that was right, discovering the sounds we could produce, new ways to create, learning how to be professional, being an authorial band with authorial sounds. Anyway, it was a real discovery.

'Lobisomem em Lua Cheia' and its amazing cover art

VI. One of the Muqueta differential is singing in Portuguese and it's done totally "decipherable"(laughs), even under the guttural or more torn vocals. Why sing only in Portuguese?

Ramires: Because we are Brazilians and we sing for our people. At first, it was difficult, it was not everyone that well accepted, but we've always believed. Gradually, the crowd was getting used, approving and supporting. Today, we are living good times on Hard Rock, so singing in Portuguese  the trend is always to be improving, because we have an identity and we must be accepted for who we really are.

VII. The dark intro "Signifer Lux", the lyrics of "Cabeça Vazia", the instrumental and clean letter for "Exu Caveira" and the incredible "Primogênito de uma Meretriz" made the second album of Muqueta, 'Blatta', released in 2013, a true masterpiece. On this album, the sound has, somehow, became more solid, more like a stoned to our faces talking about lyrical issues, but still bringing the same torn and closed guttural vocals, always contrasting. Can you tell us a little was how to produce it?
Bruno Zito: We've become more mature out from the whole process of "Lobisomem em Lua Cheia". We traveled doing shows, promoting the album, we've learned from new experiences, including the bad thing that we got ourselves into sometimes (laughs). We've always worked hard. We grow as men and also musically. This is reflected in the album 'Blatta'. It is clear that it brings more technical and elaborate arrangements, better and more consistent lyrics.

The latest work of the band called 'Blatta', it came a little bit more elaborated and consistent when it comes to lyrics

VIII. I realized something unusual in Muqueta's sound: the percussion! For example, the triangle on the track "Quebrar os Ossos da Cara". How these instruments are included in the sound of Muqueta? And how is it perceived by the public?
Ramires: It's natural. You can not force, 'cause it turns into artificial. The song asks what it needs, whether it is a particular percussion, a solo, a twist, it asks it all... The music is dictating the rules. We only obey.

IX. The first time I heard something of Muqueta was one of of Manifesto
Rock Fests in 2014 and with that short underground presentation, I could feel the charisma and the supreme stage presence of you all. You recently participated in festivals MPB (Metal Pesado Brasileiro, freely translates to Brazilian Heavy Metal) in Osasco and Sorocaba; Grito Rock in Barretos, SP and Planaltina, DF. Taking this subject, what do you guys think about the underground metal scene in São Paulo? And at national level?
Cris: We just returned from Palco do Rock Fest, in Salvador, BA, the biggest rock event in Brazil during Carnival. It is an independent event, which makes room for a lot of underground bands. Four days festival, we played on the first day to an audience of 15,000 people, according to the Police. That is, the public wants Rock, and what we need is more support from both government and private sector, because we are very misunderstood. It's hard for them to understand us and see that we are peaceful, to see that we spread culture, peace, tolerance, besides being great consumers. If we like a band, we will buy their products forever, Iron Maiden could forever tell us about this... (laughs)

X. To this date, the Muqueta has five music videos released, all very well prepared. Do you guys think about releasing some more still in 2016?

Henry:
Absolutely.
We'll do another video clip of any song on the album 'Blatta' and another video on the release of the next CD, scheduled for the second semester.

XI.
Muqueta has had reviews by Roadie Crew, Rock Brigade and Whiplash, in 2011; by Revista 77, in 2009, you guys were in Expomusic, in the edition of 2010.  Its songs are played in major radio stations such as 89FM and Kiss. Even they were recommended by Marcos Kleine (Ultrage A Rigor), still in 2015. That was to name a few people who support Muqueta na Oreia. How this feedback is seen by you?

Cris:
It's a huge honor to have our work so well received by the media, musicians and music professionals who admire and especially the public, that every day more than supports Muqueta, and all authorial bands that sing in Portuguese.
It really is a lot of work (laughs), but every effort is paying it all off. It is very rewarding to have people encouraging us, to see them listen to our music on the radio, going and turning it to insane shows, reading the materials on websites, blogs, magazines, these things (lol). We just have everything to be thankful for.

XII.
How is Muqueta's agenda? And what are the future plans?
Bruno Zito: Right now we are focused on compositions for the next album, but the shows do not stop happening (laughs). On March 13th in the East Zone of São Paulo and on March 26th in Embu das Artes, SP, our city, which it is rare for us to play there once a year or less!

XIII.
To end our conversation, I would like to thank you again for your time and willingness to answer us. I wish all the best to all of you and to the band, of course. The final space is with you, Muqueta na Oreia!
Ramires: Thank you for supporting authorial bands. You make a difference, we need this space. Thank you!!!

Henry: People, come and access our links (below) and increase the volume!

[English] Circle of Noose: The Early Circle... A Ghostly Noose Around the Neck

Originally written in Portuguese by Renan Martins
Translated to English by Caterine Souza

  Country: Brazil
  Genre: Experimental Black Metal

Grim (vocals and all instruments)

'The Early Circle ... A Ghostly Noose Around the Neck'. This is the endless name of this one-man band's EP.

Circle of Noose brings such a journey with the Experimental Black Metal at its side, like its loyal friend. There's always a guitar featuring the songs and creating melodies like the final hours of a sunny day that carry you intantly to some sort of solitary places.

This destructive and torn form of Black Metal does not disappear on this project. Don't let it fool you to think that this BM side will go away at some point because the track starts slow and then it goes through it all. This Experimental BM One-Man Band can put these two parts together in a song that makes you dream about something bright on your life and also cry drwoned in pain with the same song.

'The Early Circle ... A Ghostly Noose Around the Neck' came out via independent early this year's February and it has only two tracks, but by these two you can know pretty well how the musician, Grim, works.

The first track is titled "Landscape Behind the Eyes" and it can perfeclty show us how to join in an atmosphere of pure melancholy to make you stop and reflect for a moment on a particular rainy afternoon. This song line was built by combining the very well played guitar with the fastest drums it could have had and Grim's harsh and torn vocals. This all put together, turns this track into something really powerful to take you to lots of different feelings, it brings you some mental confusion within the pain and anguish of just being alive.

"Landscape Behind the Eyes" is the first and penultimate song, so it is responsible for opening and preparing the listener to the end of the EP on its best possible way.

The Experimental Black Metal was a perfect choice for this project/band. Using this subgenre, Grim manged to expand the BM genre and make those tracks very well made, absorbing the best part when it comes to home production.

The second and last track is entitled "The Circle Made of Kaos Through the Noose". It does not leave at any time the feeling of melancholy become more impactful than the confusion of noises created by the vocal. Grim's vocal uses a very interesting effect to
expand its rotting side and with this, he's able to reach the most  overlooked parts of a soul.

Check this work on this Bandcamp link!

Circle of Noose: The Early Circle... A Ghostly Noose Around the Neck

País: Brasil
Gênero: Experimental Black Metal

Banda:

Grim (vocais e instrumentos)

'The Early Circle... A Ghostly Noose Around the Neck'. Esse nome sem fim é o título do EP da One Man Band intitulada Circle of Noose.

Circle of Noose traz a sonoridade muito bem explorada no Experimental Black Metal.

'The Early Circle...

I. Olá, Muqueta na Oreia!

E a nível nacional?

Você faz a diferença, precisamos desse espaço. Valeeu !!!

Henry: Galera, acessem nossos links (abaixo) e aumentem o volume !

[English] Hecate: Ultima Specie

Originally written in Portuguese by Renan Martins
Translated to English by Caterine Souza

Location: Italy

Arch Stanton (bass)
Marco Lotto (drums)
Anti Christian (vocals)

Genre: Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore

The latest brutal kingdom of Hecate was titled 'Ultima Specie' and with the sound of all deaths, the work of this impressive Italian band was born.

Hecate presented differently this work. An EP that came out via Revalve Records and contains 8 tracks, but none of them has more than four minutes.

With this extremely fast, well done and brutal work, the band surprised us all and showed that you wouldn't have to jump to the next track because the current song has only one minute and you maythink that this is an instrumental song, you are so very wrong! Hecate doesn't work like that.

The way of making the initial thirty seconds of the track "Anneliese" completely instrumental realy works and it works pretty obscure. This song opens the EP and already shows the quality of the band, because with a simple sound like that, Hecate could put some tension in the air and also a perfect atmosphere for the next tracks.
"Ultima Specie" is the first track name. This song has vocals and they bring a pitiless brutality built up within an absurd depth. The guttural can be really surprising, turning  this junction of voice, weight of riffs, burned and bloody drums and even its cover art perfectly to the whole band's act.

With only 1:37, the selftitled track is already bringing it all to its complete brutality. Then, immediately after, appears this two minutes song entitled "Senza Pieta" that presents to its listeners a very interesting part of the band Torn and harsh vocals are leading the song at some times while on other times, the guttural comes out and it makes all the difference once the song finally becomes even more interesting and deeper. The falls that "Senza Pieta" features are actually fundamental to the song's weight to get better and better. Drums work in a fantastic way with the double pedal, and in a short time, the band puts a Groove Metal structure onto the song, turning this track one of the most amazing ones on this EP.

The unknown pathway that Hecate presents leaves lots of questions in the air, but the answer comes with their striking and worthy Brutal Death Metal destructive side songs. On the whole album, we can hear and understand the weight they are working with. You think that everything seems overwhelmingly done and already on the edge of perfection, then the vocals get heavier, amazing every listener! The existence of this track called "Indignati" is the proof of Hecate's destructive power. A more open vocal appears and the guttural comes soon after and this two styles make the song reach another level of weight. Hecate is always surprising us in a positive and brutal way.

With its more cadenced start, the song called "Bestia Quiet" brings hatred to the listener's eye and somehow can drag his/her soul to some kind of torture room. The guttural with cadenced drums works pretty well with the plates and the bass creates a chaotic cloud above everything else.

The band's first work is already reaching perfection. 'Ultima Specie' is certainly building an identity to Hecate.
